Shadow Company

Shadow Company is led by a “core” of 4 - 5 high school students. This Leadership Core is responsible for planning events, creating the yearly calendar, and making creative decisions regarding educational needs and the direction of each production.

Shadow Company members are expected to learn about all aspects of the theatre-making process, including onstage and offstage roles. With an ensemble-based methodology the participants work with a director and professional artist to build their skills as artists, collaborators, leaders and citizens. This year round program meets at least once a month to take master classes, attend local theatre, go on field trips and participate in play building, weekends. During the summer Shadow Company spends two weeks working on the main artistic endeavor, their original work presented each fall as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Click here for more info and to register for our summer intensive.

Shadow Company members are also given many other artistic and leadership opportunities within the organization from joining and leading in YACA’s Sort of Thing Program to Jr. Staff at summer camps and other programs. Junior staff are chosen from Shadow Company members who have been in Shadow for at least 1 year, have shown leadership and a willingness to learn, work collaboratively with others, and possess a desire to work with younger children. Junior staff are given job training classes every summer and paid a stipend for their work. Click here for more info and to apply for a summer Junior Staff postition.

Debbie Larsen: Shadow Company Program Director

Debbie

A native of Michigan, Debbie studied music performance at Michigan State University and the University of Miami. She has an extensive teaching background within el sistema-inspired youth programs and community music programs. In 2016 Debbie was selected as a fellow with The Global Leaders Program and worked with a variety of festivals across Latin and South America. As a freelance performer and teacher, many of her performances have focused on taking classical music out of the traditional concert hall and into unexpected new venues. Through her past work at the Outward Bound School of Philadelphia and as Camp Director at Yes! And… Collaborative Arts, Debbie has a vast knowledge of group facilitation through games and initiatives. She is constantly looking for new ways to transfer ideas between the outdoor education and music education domains. Debbie also works as a Youth Program Instructor at the Cliffs at Callowhill and lives in West Philadelphia with her two pups, Evie and Lindy.
