What Yes! And… does well is invite young people to think differently and imaginatively about the world and to engage confidently with one another and themselves through effective collaboration. The balanced literacy model of YET Centers is a good fit with Yes! And… as it provides a solid and successful program structure while offering the freedom for our experienced and talented Artist Teachers to plan creative, collaborative arts approaches to engage students with their learning material. Teaching children that they can learn and offering them different ways to do so makes them curious and driven for more – we’ve seen it… Students participating in our 2005/2006 program showed an average reading growth gain of 1.1 grade levels over a 180 day period. In each Yes! And… classroom, the arts and the process of ‘making’ are used as the entry way into not just learning, but into being learners. By engaging students and raising the stakes of their success, learning is no longer about memorization or even comprehension. It is about discovery, affirmation, and collaborative creation…
| How you can help…Volunteers:Yes! And… is always looking for volunteers to provide our young people with more love and attention – we can all use more of that, right?! Volunteering with Yes! And… is an experience you’ll never forget – it’s fun, it’s high energy, and you might even get to paint with your feet…! Books:You see, we have a really exciting problem… as students improve their reading skills, they read more books! And the more books they read, the more books they need… We could use your help filling the shelves of our children libraries at each site. There are several ways you could do that…
